A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray that creates an image of a woman's breast, allowing radiologists and doctors to detect the presence of breast cancer or other breast diseases.
Guidelines dictate that all women should receive an annual screening mammogram beginning at age 40, with the exception of women with increased risk due to genetic history (in such cases women should consult their doctor). Computer aided detection is used in a screening mammogram, which enhances the radiologist's ability to detect even the smallest abnormality. A diagnostic mammogram is performed when a woman or her doctor has discovered abnormal symptoms.
