Mercy Gilbert Receives Certification as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission

Mercy Gilbert has received certification as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission. This certification designates Mercy Gilbert as a facility that demonstrates exceptional effort in treating and improving long-term outcomes for stroke patients.

Stroke affects an estimated 795,000 people annually, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in adults. A transient ischemic attack (TIA), more commonly known as a mini-stroke, is a stroke lasting for less than one hour. According to the National Stroke Association, up to 40 percent of people who have a TIA will have a stroke in the near future. That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms associated with a stroke. Call 9-1-1 immediately if you have sudden onset of one or more of these symptoms:

  • Weakness or numbness of one side of the face, arm and/or leg
  • Confusion or difficulty speaking, slurred speech, or understanding
  • Problems with vision, including loss of vision or double vision
  • Dizziness or problems with balance or coordination
  • Severe unrelenting headache
